Caroline Wendling’s work explores ideas of place and belonging through layered projects that draw on history and explore local myths, inviting re-imagings of sites. She attempts to give material form to the complex interconnectedness of our mental landscapes and the actual space we inhabit. The experience of her daily rural walks from home to studio feeds her multidisciplinary practice through works that are fragile and transient, creating prints, objects, walks/performances and experiences that solicit discussion. She takes her audience on a physical, sensory and emotional journey leaving them with a poetic encounter and a story to tell.

In 2012, she created her first walk near her studio. Subsequent walks took her to New York City, Norfolk, Suffolk and Scotland where she created White Wood, a living monument to peace that will develop over the next 900 years. For White Wood, she received the special commendation from the judging panel of the Saltire Society Scotland award for Art in Public Places, 2016

She has produced several participatory journeys including Floating Walk (2017) on the river Great Ouse at St Ives; The Body of Cambridge (2018), an olfactory walk around Cambridge with Dr Rowan Boyson, Kings College London and Mohammed Jamal a bespoke perfumier; and Because it’s Empty for The Rural Assembly conference (2019) commissioned by Whitechapel Gallery, London.
